Why is this page different from the Diocesan website?

This page is a page on the new diocesan website, which has been under development for some months and is now close to completion.

We have been successfully using the improved functionality of the new diocesan site for event registrations for some months, and as we create new pages, we are now creating them in the new site rather than in the old one.

Within the next few weeks, we will add the menus to the new site and make all of its pages available. For a time, we will run it alongside the old site, as we invite comments and suggestions from users about ease of navigation and other issues.

The old (current) site may be reached by clicking here. To comment on the new site, please send email to info@dioceseny.org.

Suffragan Bishop Mary Glasspool of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles to Come to New York as Assistant Bishop

November 14, 2015

In his address to the Annual Diocesan Convention being held today at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan, the Bishop of New York, the Rt. Rev. Andrew M.L. Dietsche, announced that the Rt. Rev. Mary Douglas Glasspool, who currently serves as Suffragan Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, will join the Diocese of New York as Assistant Bishop commencing on April 1, 2016.

“Mary is a person of extraordinary ability and deep faith, a true friend, and a seasoned bishop,” Bishop Dietsche told the assembled delegates. “She will bless us in myriad ways, and it is such a personal joy to make this announcement! As many of you know, she was born on Staten Island when her father was the rector jointly of All Saints Church and Saint Simon’s Church. When she was just a few months old her father assumed the rectorship of Saint James Church in Goshen, where he continued until his retirement, and where Mary was raised to adulthood.  Her sister continues in that parish to this day, and whatever excitement you may feel about Mary’s coming to New York, it holds no candle to the joy in that family!  So this is a grand homecoming.”

Bishop Glasspool (b. Feb 23, 1954) was elected Suffragan Bishop of Los Angeles on December 4, 2009, and was consecrated on May 15, 2010 in Long Beach, California. She was the 17th woman to be elected a bishop in the Episcopal Church, and the first openly lesbian woman to become a bishop in the Anglican Communion. Raised in Goshen, NY, where her father, Douglas Murray Glasspool, served as rector of St. James’ Church until his death in 1989, she graduated Bachelor of Arts Magna cum Laude from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA in 1976; earned her Master of Divinity from Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, MA in 1981; was ordained a deacon in June 1981 by Bishop Paul Moore, Jr. of New York; and in March 1982 was ordained a priest by Bishop Lyman Ogilby of Pennsylvania.  From 1981 to 1984, she served as assistant to the rector, and later interim priest-in-charge, of St. Paul’s Church, Philadelphia, moving from there to be rector of St. Luke’s and St. Margaret’s Church, Boston, where she remained until 1992. She then moved to the Diocese of Maryland, first as rector of St. Margaret’s Church in Annapolis (1992-2001) and then, until her election in 2009 as suffragan bishop of Los Angeles, as Canon to the Bishops in the diocese.

In concluding his announcement, Bishop Dietsche said, “Mary will continue her work in Los Angeles through Easter, and begin her service to New York on April 1st, with her first parish visitation on April 10th to her sister’s parish, her father’s old church. Mary and Allen [the Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin, Suffragan Bishop of New York] have had plenty of time to talk to each other about this too, and I know that all three of us are looking forward to this expanded partnership in service to a diocese we all love.”

The Bishop then read out the following message from Bishop Glasspool:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
It is an honor and a privilege to offer a  greeting in the midst of your 239th annual Convention. I am cognizant of the importance of every minute of your time together as the Diocese of New York continues to work to bring forward God’s Reign of Love and Justice on this earth. So let me simply say how deeply grateful I am to God, to Bishops Andy and Allen, and to all of you for the wonderful opportunity to serve you in the months and years ahead. It is with great joy and a healthy amount of awe and trepidation that I do so. I look forward to ministry with you and to learning all that I can about a diocese I have loved since childhood: from Tivoli to Tottenville; from Callicoon to Port Chester. For now, I pray you every blessing and God’s Peace.
