Episcopal Service Corps New York Service + Justice Collaborative Benefit “A Balm for Our Time: In Search of Healing from Current Crises”

The Rev. Dr. Michael Battle is the Herbert Thompson Professor of Church and Society and Director of the Desmond Tutu Center at General Theological Seminary. His Ph.D. in theology and ethics is from Duke University, where he also studied as an undergraduate, and he holds additional degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and Yale University. Dr. Battle has published several books including Reconciliation: the Ubuntu Theology of Desmond Tutu and, most recently, Desmond Tutu: A Spiritual Biography of South Africa’s Confessor. He was ordained a priest by his mentor Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1993.

Sr. Monica Clare, CSJB is the Sister Superior of the Community of St. John Baptist, a convent of Episcopal nuns in Mendham, NJ. Before becoming a religious Sister at age 46, she spent over 20 years in movie advertising in Hollywood as a photo editor. Sister Monica is a spiritual director, retreat leader, and preacher, and she also has a TikTok channel called nunsenseforthepeople, where she teaches the public about the religious life.

The Rev. Anne Marie Witchger is Associate Rector and Chief of Staff at Church of the Heavenly Rest in Manhattan. Through the pandemic, Heavenly Rest has expanded its program reach and deepened its commitment to serving New York. During a time of so much loss and change, we have been strengthened by the care, creativity, and resilience of faith communities and by the hope that together we might build a just and thriving future for New York. Mother Witchger has master’s degrees from General Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary and a B.A. in religion from Earlham College.

The Reverend Matthew Hoxsie Mead is the rector of the Parish of Christ the Redeemer in Pelham. His undergraduate degree in philosophy is from the University of Chicago and he holds an M.Div. from Yale University. Father Mead serves on many committees for the Diocese of New York and the larger church and will represent the Diocese as a clergy deputy at the upcoming General Convention. He is the Chair of the General Convention Legislative Committee for Stewardship and Socially Responsible Investing and is the Secretary of the Task Force for Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision of the Episcopal Church.
