Mid-Hudson Region Latino Ministry

"The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed which when it has grown is big enough for the birds to come and roost among its branches." — Matthew 13:31

The Mid-Hudson Region Latino Ministry provides sacramental, acculturation and social services programs to the growing Spanish speaking populations in Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Sullivan counties. Our goal is to maintain the cultural integrity of the Latinos we serve. The program began in 2004 when the Mid-Hudson Regional Council authorized a committee to develop a regional Latino ministry. Today there are three worshipping congregations, programs in the northern and southern tiers of the region and plans to expand the ministry to serve the growing Latino population.

"And the king will answer, "I tell you this: anything you did for one of my brothers here, however humble, you did for me." — Matthew 25:40

Program Description

Our program coordinator plans activities and programs which lead to the development of a relationship between Spanish speaking people and their Anglo communities. These include English as a second language (ESL), cross-cultural orientation, consultation and referral concerning basic immigration issues, and interfacing with social service, education and government agencies. As trust grows between the program coordinator and the Latinos pastoral issues are shared and referred to the pastor . Our priest provides liturgy/ worship, pastoral care, evangelism, outreach and administration for members of the congregations.

"Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Let the whole earth stand in awe of Him." — Psalm 96: v 9

Congregation La Virgen de Guadalupe began in Poughkeepsie ten years ago. A small group of people requested a priest provide services in their home. Within a few weeks the congregation had become so large that it moved to Christ Church, Poughkeepsie. Today the congregation averages eighty people a Sunday. A Patronal Festival held each year in December to celebrate our patron saint attracts over four hundred people. As La Virgen de Guadalupe continues to grow it strengthens its fellowship with the Anglo congregation. Father Arnulfo Arambulo serves this congregation.
