Letters Dimissory

(transfers in and out of the Diocese)

Transfers OUT of the Diocese

1.  If you are a priest or deacon moving out of the Diocese of New York and wish to establish your canonical residence in another diocese, you must first contact the bishop of the receiving diocese and confirm your “Letters Dimissory” would be accepted.

2.  After confirming your Letters Dimissory would be accepted, you then request in writing to Bishop Heyd your desire to transfer and for your Letters Dimissory to be sent to the receiving bishop. Send this request by email to Bishop Heyd (bpheyd@dioceseny.org), and copy Alito Orsini, Liaison for Transition Ministry (aorsini@dioceseny.org).

3.  The Transition Ministry Office processes requests for transferring canonical residence. The Church Pension Group requires that the bishop sending and bishop receiving agree on the effective date of transfer. With agreed upon effective date, your Letters Dimissory are prepared.

4.  Your Letters Dimissory will then be emailed to the receiving bishop, a copy will be emailed to you, and a copy will be kept on file in the Diocese of New York. The transfer is also reported to the Church Pension Group.

5.  The transfer process is complete when the receiving bishop accepts your Letters Dimissory and confirms transfer with the Church Pension Group.

Transfers IN to the Diocese

1.  If you are a priest or deacon wishing to establish your canonical residence in the Diocese of New York, you must first contact Bishop Heyd in writing expressing your desire to transfer and request that your “Letters Dimissory” be accepted. 3.  When the application process has been completed, Bishop Heyd’s acceptance of Letters Dimissory will be prepared and emailed to the diocese you are transferring from, a copy will be emailed to you, and a copy will be kept on file in the Diocese of New York.
