Bishop Dietsche Invites People of Diocese to Service for the Victims of Natural Disasters
My dear brothers and sisters,
The last week and a half has seen, in the hurricane which has ravaged Puerto Rico, the latest in a series of natural disasters which has, in just over a month, visited unspeakable ruin upon Texas, Florida, the Caribbean (especially the Virgin Islands and Cuba), Mexico, and now Puerto Rico. Countless people in our diocese have been personally affected by these storms. Indeed, members of my own staff have lived through harrowing days in the last week waiting for word from missing family members. I know that they represent thousands of New Yorkers who have carried the same fears for those they love.
We have, following each of these events, provided information on how people in our diocese may help the victims of these disasters. We believe that the best resource for us as Episcopalians is Episcopal Relief & Development, and we have commended that to you. Now it is my honor to invite you to

The Eucharist will gather us to pray, to remember, and to be strengthened for the work of relief and redevelopment for the people directly affected, and comfort and strength for the many families in our diocese that are grieving. A free-will offering will be gathered, and those funds will be sent to the Episcopal Relief & Development Fund for use in the affected countries.
Possibly a quarter of the people of our diocese, our brothers and sisters, are West Indians, and in these their days of peril and fear I ask that we be one with them in prayer at the altars of our churches, and I invite you to join me in our cathedral on the 7th.

La última semana y media ha visto, en el huracán que ha asolado Puerto Rico, el último de una serie de desastres naturales que en poco más de un mes han infligido una indescriptible ruina en Texas, Florida, el Caribe (especialmente en las Islas Vírgenes y Cuba), México y ahora Puerto Rico. Numerosas personas en nuestra diócesis han sido afectadas personalmente por estas tormentas. De hecho, miembros de mi propio personal han vivido días desgarradores en la semana pasada esperando noticias de sus familiares desaparecidos. Sé que ellos representan a millares de neoyorquinos que han tenido los mismos temores por sus seres amados.
Después de cada uno de estos eventos, hemos proporcionado información sobre cómo las personas en nuestra diócesis pueden ayudar a las víctimas de estos desastres. La Eucaristía nos reunirá para orar, recordar y fortalecernos por el trabajo de reconstrucción y ayuda para las personas directamente afectadas y consuelo y fortaleza para las numerosas familias de nuestra diócesis que están afligidas. Se recogerá una ofrenda voluntaria, y esos fondos serán enviados al Fondo Episcopal de Socorro y Desarrollo para su uso en los países afectados.
Posiblemente una cuarta parte de la gente de nuestra diócesis, nuestros hermanos y hermanas, son antillanos, y en estos días de peligro y temor les pido que seamos uno con ellos en oración en los altares de nuestras iglesias, y les invito a unirse a mí en nuestra catedral el día 7.
