Chamber Music – Quartet for the End of Time
Sun, October 21, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The Church of St. James the Less, Scarsdale, launches its 2018-2019 concert series with a chamber music program on Sunday, October 21 at 4:00 pm. Four outstanding instrumentalists will come together for a performance of the poignant Quator pour la fin du temps by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). Written in a WW2 prison camp, the Quartet for the End of Time is one of the most powerful compositions of the modern repertoire. Pauline Kim Harris, violin Paul Won Jin Cho, clarinet Alberto Parrini, cello Robert Fleitz, piano Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Also an organist and ornithologist, he developed a style of composition that is unique and his own, often employing bird calls (he travelled around the world notating bird songs), jazz elements, complex rhythmic devices, and tranquil, beautiful melodic and harmonic devices. Messiaen was a prisoner of war in 1940, during which time he wrote the Quator pour la fin du temps for the instruments available to him. He and his fellow prisoners performed it for the inmates and prison guards. In spite of the dark circumstances, the piece offers glimpses of heaven and tranquility. The piece is in 8 movements, and lasts about 50 minutes. The Church of St. James the Less wants to make these concerts accessible to everyone in the greater Westchester area. There is no admission charge for this event, but a suggested donation of $20 is welcome.
