Parishes Should Focus First on CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program, Later on CPF Pension Assessment Waiver

Bishop Dietsche Postpones Application to CPF for Waiver of Clergy Pension Assessments

Parishes should focus first on their (more urgent) applications to the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program.

The Chancellor of the Diocese has advised Bishop Dietsche that parishes should not apply simultaneously through both the Federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Church Pension Fund (CPF) waiver program for assistance with payment of clergy pension assessments.

Funds for the PPP are limited and applications for them are being approved in the order in which banks accept them. The CPF, meanwhile, has not yet set a deadline for pension waiver applications by bishops on behalf of their parishes and clergy.

Bishop Dietsche has therefore decided to postpone his application to the CPF until the last days of April.

Please Focus for Now on The PPP, Not on the CPF Waiver

Parish leaders should focus first and immediately on applying to – and determining what relief they will receive from – the PPP before they ask the Bishop to include their clergy in his application to the CPF for waiver of two months’ of clergy pension assessments.

Even if you have applied already for a CPF pension waiver, you will need to reapply when the form is re-posted.

In a couple of weeks, we will open a new online form for parishes to request that they be covered by Bishop Dietsche’s application to the CPF. The previous form has now been removed from the website: if you already submitted a request using it, we regret that you will need to submit a new request in late April.

If you have any questions, please write to the Rev. Canon John D. Perris at jperris@dioceseny.org. Thank you.
