Guy Fawkes, along with other conspiritors, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London on 5 November 1605. His attempt was foiled and he was executed. Since then bonfires have been lit on 5 November to celebrate this deliverance of democracy from conspiracy, terrorism, and violence. The brazen Alleluia is then solemnly buried in the earth in St Benedict's Courtyard Garden with chant and full solemnity. The Cabaret in Revelation Gallery (showing the 1920s-inpsired art of Anatoliy Fatakhov. French chanteuse, Emma Lavandier, pianist Francisco Miranda, The Midtown (barbershop) Quartet, John Urban,  and other professional musicians are part of the musical line-up. The first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday, is marked by the imposition of ashes on the forehead and the call to repentance. The famous Miserere Mei Deus of Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652), with its soaring upper voice-line, reaching high C, is sung by St John's Choir with guest soprano soloist Amber Evans. The ordinary of the mass is the plainsong Missa Orbis Factor. Those of all faiths and of none are welcome to this Choral Eucharist graced with hauntingly beautiful music.

Christians have since ancient times begun and ended the working day with prayer and praise and silent meditation. The ‘daily offices’ of Morning and Evening Prayer are still prayed every weekday at St John’s by laity and clergy together. Morning Prayer, a service of about 15 minutes in duration, consists of psalmody, short readings from Scripture, canticles, prayer, and praise. There is no need to be physically present to engage fully in this service: silent listening and spiritual presence suffices.
